On July 1, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was elected chairman of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) for fiscal-year 2011-12. Elected for the third time as chairman, Villaraigosa succeeds L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe.

L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich was elected first vice chair and Lakewood Vice Mayor Diane DuBois, second vice chair.

Next year will be a crucial one for the agency, when major projects are expected to come online, Villaraigosa said in a prepared statement. Among them: the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor light-rail project, the regional underground light-rail connector and the Westway Subway extension.

“We need to bring all of our resources to bear to manage mobility with a vigorous infrastructure designed to increase economic vitality and environmental quality of the region,” Villaraigosa said.
