MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) recently named 45-year employee and Senior Vice President-Operations James Dermody president.

Dermody began his LIRR career in 1958 as a ticket clerk. He later served as train-dispatching supervisor, general manager-customer quality and planning, acting chief mechanical officer, general manager-new fleet procurement and chief transportation officer.

In 2000, Dermody was named SVP-operations, where he was responsible for overseeing the equipment maintenance, transportation, engineering, operations, analysis and support, and passenger service departments. During his SVP tenure, LIRR achieved a 94 percent on-time performance — its highest in more than 20 years.

"Dermody knows how to lead the Long Island Rail Road and has proven day in and day out to be a man we can count on for results," said MTA Executive Director Katherine Lapp in a prepared statement.
