The League of Railway Women has named Eleanor "Eldie" Acheson as the 2024 Railway Woman of the Year Award winner.
Acheson is corporate secretary and ethics officer at Amtrak. She received the award last week during the 2025 National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association Conference and NRC-REMSA Exhibition held in Marco Island, Florida.
"Eldie has championed diversity across the industry, creating pathways of opportunity for women and other minorities across the industry," LRW officials said in a post on LinkedIn.
Co-sponsored by Progressive Railroading, the Railway Woman of the Year award honors a woman who establishes a strong vision and a culture of continuous improvement and creativity, and brings excellence to her organization and community, all while supporting the personal and professional growth of others in the rail industry.
Prior to her current role at Amtrak, Acheson served as the railroad's chief legal counsel officer and general counsel. She will retire Feb. 1 after 18 years at Amtrak, according to her bio on the railroad's website.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Acheson to serve as assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Office of Policy Development. She served DOJ until 2001. Prior to DOJ appointment, Acheson spent 19 years as a trial attorney at Ropes & Gray in Boston.
