Last week, BNSF Railway Co. announced Assistant Vice Presidents Dave Tolle and John Grundmann will retire at year end, ending BNSF careers that span more than 40 and 30 years, respectively.

Currently AVP of technical training and rules, Tolle joined BNSF in 1965 as roadmaster’s clerk. He later served as trainmaster, rules examiner, director of safety and rules, and general director of technical training and rules.

Currently AVP of system safety and operations support, Grundmann joined BNSF in 1974 as a brakeman. He later held stints as road foreman of engines, trainmaster, superintendent of operations and general director of transportation.

BNSF promoted Calvin Hobbs, superintendent of the Alliance, Neb., diesel shop, to AVP of safety, training and rules to assume most of Tolle’s and Grundmann’s responsibilities. Grundmann’s dispatcher scheduling duties will be assumed by Dave Rogerson, general director of transportation policies and procedures.

Since joining BNSF in 1969 as a shop laborer, Hobbs has held stints as a machinist, safety supervisor, manager of safety, director of safety and shop superintendent.
