With the Canadian Pacific Railway merger signed off by the Surface Transportation Board, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corp.'s (DM&E) long-time leader has signed off, as well. Yesterday, the trustee for CPR's acquisition of the DM&E announced President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Schieffer has left the regional to pursue other opportunities.

Chief Operating Officer Ed Terbell and Chief Financial Officer Kurt Feaster will manage the day-to-day operations of the DM&E while the regional remains in trust. Following a 30-day review period instituted by the STB in its Sept. 30 decision, CPR expects to assume control of the DM&E on Oct. 30. Terbell and Feaster will report to trustee Richard Hamlin in the interim.

Schieffer had served as the DM&E's president since November 1996. In 1985, while he was counsel for Sen. Larry Pressler (R-S.D.) and worked to prevent the abandonment of C&NW branch lines that would eventually form the beginnings of the DM&E, he initiated negotiations that led to the regional's creation. Schieffer later served as Pressler's chief of staff and U.S. Attorney for South Dakota before joining the DM&E.
