Yesterday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) board voted unanimously to hire Beverly Scott as general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), and MassDOT Rail and Transit Division administration.

Scott, currently chief executive officer and general manager of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), will be the first woman to serve as MBTA's GM, MassDOT officials said in a prepared statement.

Scott has more than 30 years of experience in the transportation industry. She has led MARTA since 2007. Scott previously served as CEO and GM of the Sacramento Regional Transit District, and GM of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority in Providence.

"Her vast expertise in transit management is the right fit at a critical time as we manage our transportation challenges in the commonwealth," said Richard Dave, MassDOT secretary, CEO and board member.

Scott will receive a three-year contract. She will finish her term at MARTA and is expected to join MBTA in early 2013. Upon her arrival, MBTA Acting GM Jonathan Davis will return to his position as chief financial officer, state officials said.
