Yesterday, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced he intends to appoint Richard Davey, currently general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), as secretary and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), effective Sept. 1.

Davey would succeed Jeffrey Mullan, who last month announced plans to step down from the post to return to the private sector.

Davey “has a proven record of commitment to safety and customer service, along with an energetic leadership style that will allow him to hit the ground running in continuing to implement transportation reform at MassDOT,” Patrick said in a prepared statement.

Davey has served as MBTA’s GM and as MassDOT’s rail and transit administrator since March 2010. As MBTA, he has overseen an increase in ridership that hit a record 379 million unlinked passenger trips in the fiscal year ending June 30.

In his new role, Davey will be responsible for the day-to-day management of an organization created by transportation reform legislation Patrick signed in June 2009. MassDOT began operation on Nov. 1, 2009, and is governed by a five-person board appointed by the governor. The department has four divisions, including rail and transit.
