Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chair and CEO Janno Lieber this week announced he appointed criminal attorney Kathryn Falasca as the New York MTA’s first criminal justice advocate.
Falasca will work with law enforcement, prosecution agencies, and community organizations to advocate for repeat offender accountability, thorough investigation and prosecution. Her position was created to support MTA riders and employees who are victims of crime, MTA officials said in a press release.
Her appointment comes at the MTA New York City Transit marks a steady decline in crime on the subway system. Major crimes have decreased 7.7% year over year through July; overall crime in the transit system fell 3% as ridership grew by 14% in 2023, the MTA reports.
Falasca has a victim-centric and trauma-informed prosecution background, having previously held roles with the strategic initiatives bureau of the New York Police Department, the National Center for Victims of Crimes and the U.S. Department of Justice office for victims of crimes.
