Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber last week announced Rob Free has been named acting president of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).

As acting president, Free succeeds Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi, who has served as LIRR’s interim president since February 2022. Rinaldi will continue her role as Metro-North president and serve as senior adviser of MTA Railroads, MTA officials said in a press release.

Free previously served as LIRR’s senior VP of operations. As acting president, he plans to prioritize safety for riders and employees, service reliability and improving the rider experience.

He also will oversee LIRR’s continuing recovery of ridership following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as necessary schedule adjustments to adapt to new ridership patterns brought about by the service expansion created when the Main Line Third Track and Grand Central Madison opened earlier this year.
