The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System's (MTS) board recently reelected Harry Mathis to his third four-year term as chairperson.

Mathis was first elected chair in January 2006. He also has served as a San Diego City Council member, including a term as deputy mayor in 2000, before leaving office because of term limits. It was during his time on the City Council that he began his 20-year association with public transit in San Diego, according to an MTS press release.

Mathis first served as chair of San Diego Trolley and then simultaneously as the chair pro tem on the Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB), before becoming an ex-officio board member of MTS, the successor to MTDB. He was the "driving force" to bring Vintage Trolley service to San Diego, receiving board approval for the project in 2005, MTS officials said.

"Harry’s leadership has been instrumental in the continued success of MTS and our standing as one of the top public transit agencies in the nation," said Paul Jablonski, MTS chief executive officer.
