Metro Transit in Minneapolis has selected veteran police officer Eddie Frizell as the agency's next police chief.
Frizell, who has served as the Minneapolis police inspector for the city’s First Precinct since 2017, will become chief Aug. 5, Metro Transit officials said in a press release.
In his 26-year career with the Minneapolis Police Department, Frizell also worked as deputy police chief, SWAT negotiator, internal affairs investigator and as inspector of the Fifth Precinct in south Minneapolis. He's a 30-year veteran of the Minnesota Army National Guard.
As Metro Transit's police chief, Frizell will lead transit agency's police force, which provides 24-hour service on the region’s transit system and properties. The department has 120 full-time and 60 part-time officers and is expected to add more as the Southwest light-rail project enters revenue service in 2023.
Frizell succeeds John Harrington, who stepped down earlier this year to become public safety commissioner in Gov. Tim Walz's administration.
