Norfolk Southern Railway has hired Hunt Cary as vice president of operations efficiency.

Cary comes to NS from Union Pacific Railroad, where he most recently served as VP of intermodal operations.

A 28-year railroad veteran, Cary brings "extensive knowledge and leadership experience in network operations, supply-chain logistics, precision scheduled railroading and use of technology to drive efficiencies," NS officials said in a press release.

Cary began his career at NS in 1993 as a transportation management trainee, advancing to superintendent of the rail terminal in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 2003, he joined CN as superintendent of the Class I's Michigan zone, eventually becoming VP of supply-chain solutions. He moved to UP in 2018 as AVP service and strategy.

"Hunt's leadership abilities and broad experience in network operations and logistics will help Norfolk Southern accelerate our implementation of precision scheduled railroading, continue to push improvement in our cost structure, and take our operational service performance to the next level," said NS Chief Operating Officer Cindy Sanborn.

Cary will report to Sanborn, effective Feb. 15.
