Norfolk Southern Corp. has named John Friedmann vice president of strategic planning, effective May 1. He will succeed Daniel Mazur, who will retire next month.

Friedmann most recently was assistant VP in the strategic planning group. Since joining NS in 1994 as manager of strategic planning, he has served as assistant to the chairman, division superintendent and AVP of short line marketing.

Meanwhile, BNSF Railway Co. appointed Vince Cruz Jr. associate general counsel, effective May 1. He will report to Charles Shewmake, who recently became vice president and general counsel.

Cruz began representing BNSF in 1997 and joined the Class I's law department in 2006. He also serves as an adjunct professor for Texas Wesleyan Law School. Cruz previously was a prosecutor for the Tarrant County district attorney's office and practiced law privately.
