Late last month, North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) appointed Charles Burnell Jr. vice president of real estate. He is responsible for attracting commercial and industrial development opportunities for more than 40 NCRR-owned properties, most of which are located along the railroad's 317-mile corridor.

Burnell most recently served Martin Marietta Materials as manager of business development. He has more than 25 years of senior management experience in manufacturing and service operations.

"Part of the mission of NCRR is to serve as an economic development partner by attracting downtown redevelopment and new industries to the state," said NCRR President Scott Saylor in a prepared statement. "[Burnell] has a rich background in property acquisitions and management."

NCRR owns and manages a Morehead City-to-Charlotte, N.C., corridor over which Norfolk Southern Railway and Amtrak daily operate more than 60 freight trains and eight passenger trains, respectively.
