The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) recently appointed John Mason as the authority’s first-ever executive director. NVTA board members will vote on Mason’s contract during a Jan. 10 meeting.

He had served Science Applications International Corp. since 1978, most recently as vice president and director of the Transportation and Policy Analysis Center. Mason previously was a member of the Fairfax City Council from 1986 to 1990 and later became mayor, holding that post from 1990 to 2002.

He’s also held seats on the National Capitol Region Transportation Planning Board, Transportation Coordinating Council of Northern Virginia, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, the Virginia Municipal League Transportation Committee, the Governor’s Commission on Rail Enhancement for the 21st Century and Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

NVTA is responsible for the region’s long-range transportation planning, and oversees regional programs involving mass transit.
