Oberman wins election as Metra's chairman

Metra's board last week elected former Chicago Alderman Martin Oberman as chairman.

Oberman has a long career as a leader in political reform efforts, Metra officials said in a press release. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed Oberman to Metra's board in September 2013.

Metra must move beyond regional divisions and competition and act in the best interests of the system as a whole, Oberman said in a prepared statement.

"A well-functioning Metra is essential to the economic well-being of the entire six-county region," he said.

Oberman plans to establish Metra as a "well-run" railroad operated with professionalism and transparency, he added.

"The days of the chairman acting as a power center are over," said Oberman. "I am just one of 11 votes, and all of us will have an equal voice in Metra's affairs."

Oberman served as alderman from Chicago's 43rd Ward from 1975 to 1987, where he was known for independence and pushing a reform agenda, according to Metra.
