The OneRail Coalition announced this week it presented its 2024 Canby Awards to Paul Nissenbaum of the Federal Railroad Administration and Mariah Morales of Amtrak.

Named for OneRail’s former director Anne Canby, the award recognizes individuals who have strongly supported the advancement of rail in the United States.

“Their work has contributed to the increased visibility of rail across the U.S. and raised public awareness of the critical role of passenger and freight rail to the economy, public safety and the environment,” said OneRail Chair Chuck Baker in a press release.

Nissenbaum has served as associate administrator for railroad development at the FRA since January 2012, leading the office responsible for FRA’s rail investment and network development programs. Prior to his role at the FRA, Nissenbaum worked at Amtrak, on Capitol Hill as a congressional staffer and as a surface transportation and environmental consultant.

Morales, who is Amtrak's director of external affairs, is a recognized leader in the rail industry with a track record of  advancing passenger-rail policies and initiatives, OneRail officials said. As part of the Amtrak Government Affairs team since 2015, she works with Congress, coalitions, advocacy groups and labor and trade associations. Prior to joining Amtrak, Morales was a government affairs representative for transit, transportation, and municipal clients.
