The Ontario government on Monday named Infrastructure Ontario CEO Michael Lindsay as the interim president and CEO of Metrolinx. He will begin transitioning to the new role on Dec. 9.

Lindsay will succeed Phil Verster, who recently informed the transit agency's board that he has accepted a new position and will move on as early as Dec. 16, according to an Ontario government press release.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford gave Lindsay a mandate to open the Eglinton Crosstown light-rail transit line "as soon as it is safe to do so as his top priority." The line will run between east and west Toronto with 25 stations along a dedicated route.

"With his many years of service helping to build our great province as president and chief executive officer of Infrastructure Ontario, no one is better positioned to take on this role than Michael,” Ford said.

The Metrolinx board will soon begin a search for a permanent president and CEO, government officials said. An interim president and CEO at Infrastructure Ontario is expected be announced in the coming days.
