Operation Lifesaver Inc.'s board has elected Robert VanderClute chairman.

VanderClute is president and chief operating officer of FirstRail International. He previously served as senior vice president of safety and operations at the Association of American Railroads.

He also spent 27 years at Amtrak, where he rose to vice president of operations and chief operating officer.

VanderClute "is a respected expert with a deep understanding of rail safety issues and the importance of OLI's role in urging drivers and pedestrians to stay safe near railroad tracks and crossings," said OLI President and Chief Executive Officer Bonnie Murphy in a press release.

VanderClute assumes the duties of William Barringer, a railroad consultant and former Norfolk Southern Railway employee who recently resigned as OLI's chair. Barringer stepped down from his OLI duties to focus on other activities and family, Murphy said.

Jo Strang, vice president for safety and regulatory policy at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, will continue serving as OLI's vice chair.

In addition, BNSF Railway Co. Director of Field Safety Support Steven Neubauer will continue to serve as OLI's secretary treasurer.
