The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) on Monday announced the appointment of Richard Holwell as interim general counsel. He'll serve in that position while the port conducts a nationwide search for a permanent successor for former General Counsel Darrell Buchbinder, who retired last month after more than 35 years of service, PANYNJ officials said in a press release. As interim general counsel, Holwell will oversee the port's law department, which is composed of 65 lawyers and outside counsel who handle litigation, along with contract, employment, finance, leases, public securities and other legal matters.A former federal judge with nearly 45 years of experience in the legal field, Holwell is a partner at the law firm of Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP. He'll continue maintaining his practice at the firm while serving at the port, PANYNJ officials said.Following his nomination by former President George W. Bush, Holwell in September 2003 was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
