Canadian government officials this week announced Mario Peloquin will become VIA Rail Canada Inc.'s president and CEO on June 12.

Peloquin will serve a five-year term, Transport Canada officials said in a press release. He has nearly 40 years of experience in the transportation and rail industries and most recently served as executive vice president of major projects for Keolis.

Peloquin is former chief operating officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City. He also was president and CEO of Thales Transport & Security Inc. and senior VP of SNC-Lavalin. In addition, he's held various roles at CN, Transport Canada, Siemens and AECOM.

Meanwhile, VIA Rail yesterday published its annual progress report on sustainability goals. The report highlights VIA Rail's new decarbonization plan; the extension of an artificial intelligence pilot project to reduce fuel consumption; and changes in packaging and products that are aimed at waste reduction.
