The Regional Transportation District-Denver yesterday named Joel Fitzgerald as the agency’s next chief of police and emergency management.
Fitzgerald has three decades of law enforcement experience, including as chief of police in Missouri City, Texas; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Fort Worth, Texas; and Waterloo, Iowa.
"Joel is a courageous leader," said RTD General Manager and CEO Debra Johnson in a press release. "He builds coalitions, he is focused on strategic planning and he has expanded community policing everywhere he has served — all elements that are important to RTD."
Fitzgerald began his law enforcement career in 1992 at the Philadelphia Police Department, where he advanced through the ranks over 17 years. He also has been a member of several law enforcement and racial equity professional organizations, and in 2019 was elected to the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Board, for which he now serves as second vice president.
Fitzgerald succeeds Robert Grado, who stepped down in March 2022. Deputy Chief Steve Martingano had served as interim chief until Fitzgerald’s appointment.
