Reading & Northern Railroad yesterday announced it has hired Eric Peters as vice president of transportation and safety. He will succeed Thomas Cook, who will retire later this year.

Peters joins the railroad from Norfolk Southern Railway, where he's worked for the past 14 years. He joined the Class I as a management trainee and rose through the ranks, ultimately reaching the position of superintendent at the Harrisburg Division earlier this year.

Reading & Northern's interchanges with NS all occur in the Harrisburg Division, which gives Peters a good perspective on the regional's operation, Reading & Northern officials said in a press release.

"In choosing Eric, we were tremendously impressed with his operational knowledge and knowledge of our operating territory, but more importantly his leadership background," said Wayne Michel, president of Reading & Northern. "We believe Eric will do a great job running our daily train operations and he will further cement the excellent working relationship we have with NS."
