The Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC) recently appointed Daniel Rickel to the newly created position of vice president, effective Sept. 11. He will report to LIRC President John Secor.

Rickel has served as president of the Northern Lines Railway (NLR) since 2004 and will retain that post. Both LIRC and NLR are affiliates of Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc.

Rickel, who has more than 30 years of rail experience, began his career as a switchman and locomotive engineer for the Chicago and North Western Railroad. He later served as trainmaster, assistant terminal superintendent and manager of terminal operations at the Union Pacific Railroad’s Proviso Yard in Chicago. In 1997, Rickel became general manager of operations for the Twin Cities & Western Railroad and its Minnesota Prairie Line affiliate.

Launched in 1994, LIRC operates 106 route miles of track acquired from Conrail, a former Pennsylvania Railroad mainline that’s considered the most direct route between Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis, according to the short line.
