The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (SCVTA) yesterday announced that Nuria Fernandez has stepped down as general manager and chief executive officer to join the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
The authority's board appointed Evelynn Tran as interim GM and CEO while a national search is conducted, SCVTA officials said in a press release.
The USDOT later this week is expected to announce Fernandez’s new position.
Fernandez has served as SCVTA’s GM and CEO for seven years. She also served as chair of the American Public Transportation Association from 2019-2020 while the industry was faced the pandemic, a recession and unrest over racial injustices, SCVTA officials said. She has more than 35 years of experience.
Prior to leading SCVTA, Fernandez served as chief operating officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and senior vice president of design and construction for the Chicago Transit Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. She also served as commissioner for the Chicago Department of Aviation, and as acting federal transit administrator during President Bill Clinton's administration.
