The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has announced Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum will serve as acting director of transportation following the departure of Jeffrey Tumlin.

Kirschbaum will assume her new duties on Jan. 1, 2025. Tumlin, who has served as transportation director since 2019, announced earlier this month that he would step down.

Kirschbaum will build on the progress Tumlin made in Muni light-rail service improvements, SFMTA officials said in a press release.

The improvements were completed as the SFMTA facing a financial crisis. Revenue in fiscal-year 2023-2024 was $275 million, or 16% less than it was prior to the pandemic. The agency has been relying on federal pandemic relief funding for the past four years, but those funds will run out in FY2026-2027.

Tumlin has worked with the San Francisco Controller’s Office to set up a working group to gather public input and find potential solutions to the funding gap, SFMTA officials said.
