The Surface Transportation Board today announced that board member Michelle Schultz has been designated vice chairman. She has been a board member since Jan. 11, 2021.
As vice chair, Schultz succeeds Karen Hedlund, who continues to serve as a board member. The vice chairmanship rotates among the members on an annual basis, according to an STB press release.
Schultz served as vice chair from February 2022 to January 2023. For the previous 14 years, Schultz served in leadership roles, including as deputy general counsel, at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. She is regarded as a leading lawyer and policy professional in the public transportation sector, according to her bio on the STB website.
Schultz obtained a master's degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a juris doctor degree from Widener University School of Law.
Schultz's new role on the STB follows President Donald Trump's announcement on Monday that Patrick Fuchs will chair the board.
Yesterday, Fuchs announced key staff selections, including Lisa Novins as chief of staff; Thomas Quinn as attorney-adviser; and Stephanie Borges as administrative assistant.
