The San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) named April Chan its new general manager and CEO, effective Nov. 1.
Chan has worked for the California transit agency for more than 20 years and currently serves as acting deputy GM and CEO. She succeeds Acting GM and CEO Carter Mau, who is retiring, SamTrans officials said in a press release.
She will be the first female GM and CEO in SamTrans' history as well as the first permanent GM and CEO to be promoted from within the agency, said SamTrans Director Jeff Gee.
Chan joined SamTrans in 2000 and has held roles of increasing responsibility, from senior planner of capital programming and grants to chief officer of planning, grants and transportation authority before becoming acting deputy GM.
She is credited with multiple accomplishments, including leading the application process for the $647 million federal core capacity grant for the Caltrain electrification program and securing more than $2 billion in other funding for the project, officials said.
"Ms. Chan has a stellar reputation for working well with regional partners and is widely respected in the industry for her knowledge, professionalism and integrity," Gee said.
