San Diego MTS dedicates trolley station to former chairman Williams

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) recently dedicated the San Diego State University Trolley Station to former Chairman Leon Williams “for his tireless support of public transit and more than 30 years of public service,” MTS officials said in a prepared statement.

As MTS chairman, Williams was instrumental in bringing trolley service to the center of the San Diego State University campus, including a trolley station that opened in July 2005, they said.

“Without Leon, the trolley may never have made it to campus,” said Harry Mathis, MTS’ current chairman. “Leon insisted on an alignment that came to the heart of the campus. And it has been a great success from the very first day.”

Williams served as the agency’s vice chairman from 1985 until he was named chairman in 1994, a post he held until he retired in 2006. Upon his retirement, Williams was designated chairman emeritus.
