San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) recently appointed Harry Mathis Jr. chairman to succeed Leon Williams, who retired.

A former San Diego councilman and deputy mayor, Mathis served on committees that focus on public transportation, commuter rail and traffic demand management. He was elected to the MTS board in 1994 and served as board chair for San Diego Trolley from 1995 to 2003. Mathis most recently served as an ex-officio member of the MTS board and executive committee.

He will begin serving his four-year term Jan. 1.
