The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) appointed Manuel Guaderrama director of security.

He assumes the duties of MTS Chief of Police Bill Burke, who died June 29.

In the new role, Guaderrama will oversee 185 security officers from Transit Systems Security, which is a contracted security agency for MTS. He'll also be responsible for directly managing 35 code compliance inspectors who check for piper fares, maintain a safe environment at transit stations and issue citations, MTS officials said in a press release.

During his 30-year tenure with the San Diego Police Department, Guaderrama led many different teams, including SWAT, traffic and K-9 units, MTS officials said.

He also recently graduated from the FBI National Academy.
