The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) yesterday appointed Julie Kirschbaum director of transit. Kirschbaum has been acting director of transit since October 2018.

In her new role, Kirschbaum will manage the agency’s transit division, which oversees day-to-day Muni metro light-rail operations.

She has more than 20 years of transportation experience and was selected in 2017 as SFMTA chief transportation officer. Her experience includes managing the SFMTA transit planning and scheduling group and implementing a systemwide redesign, agency officials said in a press release.

Prior to joining the SFMTA, Kirschbaum served as a senior transportation planner with the San Francisco County Transportation Authority and as a consultant in the private sector.

“Over the last several months, Julie has proven to be very responsive to feedback from the [SFMTA] board and the general public,” said SFMTA Chair Malcolm Heinicke. “Julie is a transit expert and she has taken responsibility for the issues that have occurred on her watch so far. I respect her candor and tenacity and I am confident she will give it her all to bring the changes we need to make our system better.”
