Just days after former Executive Director George Warrington officially left New Jersey Transit to launch his own consulting firm, the agency named his successor. Yesterday, New Jersey Transit appointed Richard Sarles Sr. to the top post.

For the past five years, Sarles has served as the agency’s assistant executive director for capital programs and planning, managing NJ Transit’s $1.3 billion annual capital program. From 1996 to 2002, he was a vice president at Amtrak, where he oversaw the Northeast Corridor high-speed rail program and other capital projects throughout the country.

Sarles previously spent more than 20 years in various construction, and project management and planning positions at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
