The Sound Transit board last week appointed Kent Keel chair and Dow Constantine, vice chair.
The appointments take effect Jan. 1, following the retirement of outgoing Chair John Marchione from his position as mayor of Redmond, Washington. Marchione also served on Sound Transit’s board for 12 years, agency officials said in a press release.
Keel is mayor of University Place, Washington. He will serve the remaining year of the board chair term left by Marchione's departure, and Constantine will fill the vice chair seat vacated by Keel. Constantine is King County executive.
A second vice chair role will continue to be filled by Paul Roberts, an Everett City Council member.
"Chair Keel's leadership will come at a critical time for the region, and particularly for Pierce County as we construct Tacoma Link's extension to the Hilltop neighborhood, prepare to connect regional light rail to Tacoma and work to expand Sounder service,” Sound Transit Chief Executive Officer Peter Rogoff said.
One of Keel’s priorities will be to identify transportation funding solutions, he said.
