South Carolina Ports Authority President and CEO Jim Newsome and incoming President and CEO Barbara Melvin were recently honored for their achievements.
Newsome received the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award a civilian can receive in the state, from Gov. Henry McMaster. The award recognizes one's lifetime achievements and contributions to South Carolina, SC Ports officials said in a press release.
Newsome has served as the authority's president and CEO for 13 years and is set to step down June 30. Under his leadership, the port has enhanced its port operations and grown its cargo base, attracting global companies to the Port of Charleston, SC Ports officials said.
Melvin received the 2022 Women of Courage Award from the College of Charleston School of Business and the Women for Women Summit. The award recognizes inspirational, impactful and courageous female leaders who have made significant contributions to their industry, SC Ports officials said.
Melvin will succeed Newsome on July 1. She has served the port for more than 20 years in roles in government relations, public relations, community engagement and operations. She became the port's first chief operating officer in 2018.
The Port of Charleston is served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway and offers daily express intermodal service.
