The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) recently elected Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro as chairman and Broward County businessman James Cummings, as vice chairman.Barreiro originally was elected as SFRTA's chairman in 2006 and was re-elected in 2007. He served on the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority board from 2000 to 2003, with stints as vice chair from 2001 to 2002, and chair from 2002 to 2003. Barreiro was elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission in 1998 and re-elected in 2004.He currently is chairman of the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, as well as the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization and Miami River Commission. Cummings joined SFRTA's board in 1997, serving as vice chair from 2000 to 2001, and chair from 2001 to 2002. He is retired, but spent many years as a general contractor and owned his own firm. As chair of SFRTA's Construction Oversight Committee, Cummings spearheaded the Segment 5 double-track project. He currently is overseeing the construction of a new SFRTA operations center.
