BNSF Railway Co. recently named Mark Schulze to succeed Greg Stengem as vice president of safety, training and operations support. Stengem, who began his BNSF career in 1970 as an agent/telegrapher for the Burlington Northern Railroad, plans to retire June 1.

Currently general manager of BNSF’s Texas Division, Schulze will report to Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Carl Ice. A BNSF employee since 2001, Schulze previously served as VP and chief sourcing officer, and AVP of consumer products marketing.

Between 1970 and 1994, Stengem served in various operating and management positions, including train dispatcher, manager of train and power operations, manager of road operations, trainmaster, superintendent of transportation, assistant terminal superintendent and assistant superintendent of transportation.

In 1995, he was appointed assistant general manager of BNSF’s network operations center. A year later, Stengem was named assistant vice president of coal operations, shortly followed by appointments as AVP of transportation and VP-Burlington Lines. In 1997, he was named VP of service design and systems, and in 1999, VP of safety, training and operations support.
