Nick Tennyson was named acting transportation secretary of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

Tennyson previously worked as mayor of Durham, N.C., and also served with the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization.

He assumes the duties of Tony Tata, who resigned last week to focus on personal and family matters, staffers from North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory's office said in a press release.

During his time at the agency, Tata helped formulate and implement McCrory's "strategic mobility formula," which funds projects based on congestion relief, safety improvements and potential for long-term job creation.

Tata also helped develop the governor's 25-Year Transportation Vision, the state's first comprehensive plan to integrate roads, airports, rail systems and ports.
