Last week, TranSystems Corp. announced it named Thomas Schmidt vice president to oversee the company's Jacksonville, Fla., and Chicago offices.
Schmidt will be responsible for coordinating railroad and multi-modal projects throughout the eastern United States, and helping plan the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program.
He most recently served as a consultant after retiring as CSX Transportation's vice president of engineering in December 2003. Schmidt held that post twice, from 1992 to 1995, and again from 1998 through 2003. During his 34-year railroading career, he obtained experience in railway and industrial engineering, management, operations, regulatory issues, government relations, capital/strategic planning, labor relations, safety, mergers and acquisitions, and procurement.
Schmidt currently serves on American Railway Engineering and Maintenance Association's (AREMA) board. He previously served two terms as AREMA's director.
"Tom will provide a unique depth of insight and understanding to our clients' needs," said TransSystems Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Larson in a prepared statement.
