Canada's Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez yesterday announced the appointment of Martin Imbleau as the inaugural CEO of VIA High Frequency Rail (HFR)-VIA TGF Inc., effective Sept. 8.

Imbleau was chosen after an open merit-based selection process carried out by VIA HFR’s board. Most recently the CEO of the Port of Montreal, Imbleau has lengthy experience in energy transportation systems and major infrastructure projects, Canadian government officials said in a press release.

The VIA HFR project will create a sustainable train network that will run on mostly dedicated tracks at higher frequencies, higher speeds and with greater reliability between Toronto and Quebec City, according to the project website.

"The unprecedented nature and scale of the High Frequency Rail project requires a strong corporate leadership team. With his many years of executive-level experience in the transportation sector, I am confident Mr. Imbleau will be successful in leading the transformative and visionary High Frequency Rail project,” said Rodriguez.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Rodriguez as transport minister last month. He succeeded Omar Alghabra in the role.
