The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) has appointed Maurice Henderson II chief operating officer, effective July 16.

He currently serves as chief of staff and director of strategic initiatives for Ted Wheeler, the mayor of Portland, Oregon. Before he joined the mayor's office, Henderson was assistant director of the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

During his time at the bureau, Henderson worked closely with TriMet leadership to "elevate the importance of transit in the city," agency officials said in a press release.

"Maurice has been a strong partner with TriMet and advocate for transit through his roles in the mayor’s office and the bureau of transportation," said TriMet General Manager Doug Kelsey. "His innovative approaches, strategic thinking and demonstrated leadership will be vital at a time of expansive growth, change and technological advancement for TriMet."

At the transit agency, Henderson fills a position left open after Kelsey was promoted to general manager in March.
