For the first time in the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon's (TriMet) 51-year history, a woman will lead its board. Linda Simmons has won election as board president, effective July 1.

Currently the board’s secretary and treasurer, Simmons succeeds Bruce Warner, whose term ends June 30. She was appointed to the board by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown in December 2016 and represents District 3, which covers Southwest Portland, Tualatin, Tigard and Beaverton.

Simmons has wide-ranging administrative and executive experience spanning almost four decades, according to a news release. She has received national recognition as a leader in shaping public policy to enhance student access to post-secondary education, TriMet officials said. Simmons also has been recognized as an innovative leader and coalition builder, banding together the diverse needs of civic, education, business and government groups.

Lori Irish Bauman will remain in her current position as the board's vice president and Ozzie Gonzalez will become secretary and treasurer.
