The Sacramento Regional Transit District posted a ridership surge in April. The agency’s light-rail system carried 1.5 million passengers, representing a 43.3 percent jump compared with April 2007’s ridership.

During the past year, light-rail ridership has steadily increased, to the point it now has surpassed bus ridership for the first time since the agency launched rail service in 1987.

Meanwhile, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority posted its second-highest ridership day for the second time this month. On Tuesday, the agency’s Tri-Rail commuter-rail system carried 16,024 passengers, a figure topped only by the 18,452 passengers that rode the system on June 23, 2006, when the Miami Heat held an NBA championship parade. On May 8, the agency carried 15,871 passengers.
