Kansas City Southern recently appointed Michael Upchurch senior vice president of financial management and purchasing. Reporting to Executive VP and Chief Financial Officer Patrick Ottensmeyer, Upchurch will direct The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. and advise Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. on long-range planning, purchasing and internal audit issues.

Prior to joining KCS, Upchurch served Sprint Nextel for 16 years, most recently as SVP of financial operations. He previously held various positions at Price Waterhouse.

Meanwhile, the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA) named Joseph McGonigle VP of sales and marketing to succeed Richard Rushmore, who will retire March 31.

A 35-year transportation industry veteran, McGonigle most recently served Stora Enso North America as director of logistics development/rail. He previously was VP of sales and marketing for Nexus Distribution. McGonigle's railroad experience includes stints as assistant manager of marketing for the Milwaukee Road and director of marketing for Wisconsin Central Ltd.

"[McGonigle's] extensive paper industry and rail transportation experience will be invaluable as we strengthen our business base," said MMA President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Grindrod in a prepared statement.

Established in January 2003, MMA operates lines totaling 754 miles in Maine, Vermont and New Brunswick, Quebec.
