Robert Wilson has been appointed chief of public transportation for the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

In his new role, Wilson will oversee the state’s public and human service transportation, as well as transportation demand management programs. In addition, he will guide strategy for congestion relief, public benefits and land-use considerations in transportation planning.

Wilson has 20 years of transportation experience, including the past 13 as chief executive for three separate agencies. Prior to joining DRPT, he served as executive director of the George Washington Regional Commission, the planning district commission for the city of Fredericksburg and several counties.

Wilson’s “demonstrated leadership skills and extensive knowledge of all facets of the transit industry make him a perfect candidate” for the position, said DRPT Director Thelma Drake in a prepared statement.
