Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) outgoing General Manager and CEO Paul Wiedefeld yesterday announced that Interim Police Chief Michael Anzallo will officially become the department’s new chief.

Since named interim chief in August 2021, Anzallo has focused on community policing throughout the challenges of the pandemic. He’s credited with bolstering officer accountability measures, building community relationships and expanding police presence for the growing WMATA system, agency officials said in a press release.

"Chief Anzallo is a trusted leader in [the department] who has built important relationships with our communities and jurisdictional police partners," said Wiedefeld. "He demonstrates genuine concern for helping to solve very difficult challenges that are unique to our business and the region."
