WMATA taps Cherrington as inspector general

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) board has named Geoffrey Cherrington inspector general.

He'll be formally appointed at the agency's March 23 board meeting and begin his duties April 17, WMATA officials said in a press release.

Cherrington currently serves as assistant inspector general for investigations (AIGI) at the U.S. Department of State, where he oversees worldwide investigations and other law enforcement efforts within the department, the Broadcasting Board of Governors and the International Boundary and Water Commission.

In 2007, he entered the Senior Executive Service and was deputy AIGI at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Cherrington later became AIGI at the General Services Administration.

Before that, he spent 13 years with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. He also served in the U.S. Army as a criminal investigation command special agent and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm.

"With nearly 30 years of public sector experience, Mr. Cherrington brings a wealth of knowledge and investigative expertise to this role at a critical time for Metro," said Metro Second Vice-Chair and Audits and Investigations Committee Chair Jim Corcoran. "Geoff is an energetic leader who believes in building relationships and who is committed to ensuring the Office of Inspector General is a resource for the authority."
