Mike Wiley has announced plans to retire from his post as general manager and chief executive officer of the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT).

He'll remain with the agency until Jan. 1, 2017, but is expected to remain on call  through November 2017, SacRT officials said in a news release.

Wiley began working at the agency as a service planner in 1978 and has served as a member of SacRT's executive management team for the past 32 years. In his various leadership roles, Wiley has had direct oversight of almost every department in the agency, including engineering, finance and marketing, SacRT officials said.

He served as deputy general manager for two years before being named GM/CEO in 2007.

"[SacRT] and the Sacramento region have been most fortunate to have Mike Wiley at the helm," said Jay Schenirer, SacRT chair and Sacramento City Council member. "His numerous accomplishments and vast knowledge of all aspects of transit and RT have been invaluable. Although his retirement will create a significant void, the RT board of directors fully supports his decision."

In the next 60 days, SacRT will begin a national recruitment search, which is expected to take approximately six months. The recruitment search committee will consist of four members of the 11-member SacRT board supported by Wiley.
