A long-time Class I and short-line industry executive has called it quits. Fred Yocum Jr. retired July 31 as Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Inc.'s (MMA) vice president of finance and administration, treasurer and chief financial officer, ending his 41-year railroading career.

Yocum joined MMA predecessor Bangor and Aroostook System in 1999, and served as president from 2001 to 2003. He later became vice chairman and chief financial officer at MMA, which operates 754 route miles in Maine, Vermont, New Brunswick and Quebec.

In 1967, Yocum began his career with CSX Transportation predecessor the Chessie System as a trainee. In 1974, he joined the Chicago and North Western Railroad, where he eventually became division manager and assistant vice president.

From 1977 to 1979, Yocum was vice president of operations and marketing for the United States Railway Association, then he rejoined the Chessie System, becoming VP of transportation in 1982. He later served as president and chief executive officer of Iowa Interstate Railroad Ltd. prior to joining the Bangor and Aroostook System.
