The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will finish installing positive train control (PTC) on the Newburyport/Rockport Line by Aug. 27, a month ahead of schedule.

As a result, weekend PTC installation on the Needham Line will begin several weeks earlier than planned, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Service on the Needham Line will be suspended on Saturdays from Sept. 2 through Nov. 18.

MBTA interim General Manager Steve Poftak earlier this month visited the site of PTC installation on the Newburyport/Rockport Line as part of his tour of the agency's various infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, the agency continues to advance PTC work on the Lowell Line. Crews began the installation Aug. 5 and will continue working on the weekends through Oct. 1.
